Collaborating to transform health and social care systems for inclusivity and racial justice.

Transforming Health and Care Systems

The Collective Action for Race Equity in Health and Social Care (CARE-HSC) is a research initiative dedicated to understanding and tackling racial inequalities in health and social care. By combining rigorous research, community collaboration, and creative approaches, we aim to create fairer, more inclusive systems for staff, carers, and the communities they serve.

Our Commitment to Transformative Change

CARE-HSC addresses structural inequalities by examining the systems, policies, and practices in health and social care that perpetuate racial inequities. We centre lived experience by working closely with carers, community organisations and the health and social care workforce, ensuring those most affected help shape our research. Using innovative approaches, including qualitative and quantitative research alongside creative methods such as arts and advocacy, we generate new evidence to drive meaningful change. Our findings aim to influence policy and practice, creating safer, fairer, and more inclusive care environments.

"We will put a spotlight on the mechanisms that allow racial inequities to persist within systems of care and how to tackle resistance to change, and we will bring those most affected closer to policymaking for sustainable solutions."

Building on Strong Foundations

CARE-HSC builds on the groundbreaking TIDES study (Tackling Inequalities and Discrimination Experiences in health Services), which highlighted the widespread impact of racism, discrimination, and inequality across the UK health and social care workforce. TIDES provided the first comprehensive evidence of how structural and interpersonal racism shapes staff and patient experiences, influencing career progression, wellbeing, and care outcomes. CARE-HSC takes this work forward, expanding the evidence base, amplifying lived experiences, and co-developing practical solutions to transform care systems for the better.
