Ways of Working

2

At Collective Action for Race Equity in Health and Social Care (CARE-HSC), how we work is as important as what we do. Our approach is rooted in collaboration, reflection, and collective care, principles that ensure our efforts to advance race equity in health and social care are inclusive, transparent, and accountable.

Our Foundations

Our approach builds on the work of the Health & Social Equity Collective, which brings together communities, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to co-develop and embed equitable ways of working across health and care systems.

The Collective’s Delphi process was used to develop a set of guiding principles that inform how we collaborate across CARE-HSC:

Our Ways of Working

We are committed to creating an environment where collaboration thrives, and everyone feels heard and respected. Our shared commitments are to:

Be open-minded
Acknowledge assumptions and consider other perspectives.
Create a safe and inclusive space
Encourage openness and ensure everyone feels welcome.
Share the space
Be mindful of airtime and make room for all voices.
Be present
When meeting online, keep cameras on where possible and minimise distractions.
Show mutual respect
Value diversity of experience and recognise our shared humanity.
Assume good intent
Approach discussions with kindness and curiosity.
Challenge ideas, not people
Question assumptions and conclusions, not individuals.
Maintain confidentiality
Respect that personal experiences shared within the group stay within the group.

These principles shape how we design, deliver, and communicate our work, fostering a culture of trust, inclusion, and shared learning.
