Dr Amber McKenzie
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Dr Amber McKenzie is a Wellcome Trust Fellow and Postdoctoral Research Associate at the King’s Centre for Military Health Research (KCMHR), King’s College London. Her research focuses on the health and employment outcomes of underrepresented groups (e.g., women, racial and ethnic minorities) in male-dominated workplaces, using the military as a case study better to understand workplace inequalities, inclusion, and wellbeing. Her work particularly examines how overlapping identities, including gender and race/ethnicity, shape experiences within occupational settings and influence long-term health and employment outcomes.
Within CARE-HSC, Amber leads the qualitative work package to understand the lived experiences of formal carers in healthcare to understand how sources of racism (e.g., structural, interpersonal) impact work experiences and care delivery. This work package complements a wider, mixed-methods workstream which will identify how racial inequities in healthcare persist through workplace mechanisms.
Amber completed her PhD in Psychological Medicine at King’s College London in 2024. Her doctoral research explored adjustment disorder in the UK Armed Forces using a mixed-methods approach, examining prevalence, risk factors, and the lived experiences of military personnel diagnosed with an adjustment disorder.
Since joining King’s College London in 2018, Amber has worked across a range of military health and occupational mental health projects. Her current programme of research aims to improve understanding of the experiences of minority groups in certain occupations and to inform more equitable workplace policy and practice.
